Business Problem The Woodlawn Housing Initiative was designed as a proving ground for new concepts in community development. It involved private developers, non-profit housing developers, universities, social service agencies and local neighborhood organizations. The application goal was to develop a systematic method of collecting large amounts of information concerning the housing stock and in the Birmingham Metropolitan area, process that information, and create an efficient method of disseminating that information in an easy to understand format. Collecting information needed to be simple and inexpensive. A platform was needed to hold the large amounts of information collected and could be quickly accessed. An interface was needed that presented the information in an understandable format. The system had to satisfy the requirements and expectations of all the different partners involved. It had to be flexible and expandable. Technology Implemented A variety of technologies were involved throughout the development of this project. ArcPad was used in conjunction with digital cameras to identify and located properties though the housing survey process. ArcGIS, including ArcMap and ArcCatalog, was used to compile the data. ArcSDE was used to store and retrieve data layers. ArcIMS was used to consolidate the information into a single source. Operating systems used through this process includes Pocket PC, Windows NT, and Unix. Development Team Biography GIS WEB SITE DESIGN, PROJECT AND DATA COORDINATION
